Welcome to the NEW FOOD TECH Project

Building up a network for dissemination of the novel food legislation and new technologies used in novel food production (NEW FOOD-TECH project)

Project Summary

There are many foods on the market, but only some are classified as novel. Novel foods are foods and food ingredients that have not been used for human consumption to a significant degree within the Community before 15 May 1997.

This project aims to prepare and deliver customized materials, and resources to the target group consisting of food operators, food inspectors, officials and experts working in novel food area to gain knowledge, that will be a technical background in their work by introducing them with new technologies used in novel food production and EU legislation on this issues.

Thanks to the new technologies used in their production, novel food issue is a popular issue and this project will enable the target group to reach up-to-date information by the website that will be built up within the project. Target group will be able to share information from selected EU countries via reports, CD, web page as the outputs of the project. This project will also enable the beneficiaries to develop personnel capacity in the novel food area and support their technical knowledge and also to meet with the future project partners.

Project Objectives:

  • To ensure the better understanding of legislation as regard novel food in the EU
  • To provide the key staff with new information on novel food technologies and legislation
  • To increase the awareness level of public on novel food
  • To widen the vision of the partners which are dealing with novel food
  • To help target group get to know vocations on these topics
  • To get in touch with other related organizations and institutions for exchanging information about novel food and GMO
  • To establish a website for the up-to date technologies used in novel food production and establishment of a database for the existing novel foods on markets
  • To meet with future project partners on novel food issues

Originally, the Novel Food legislation was conceived by the European Commission in response to the arrival of food products derived from GM crops. These types of GM derived food are now regulated by separate legislation, EC (No.) 1829/2003 The original approach and objectives of the project was based on the same interpretation.

During the development of the project, as suggested by some third level partners and experts, in line with the new regulations set out by the European Commission (258/97 EC), despite sound scientific interpretation of GMOs as Novel Foods, the Partnership has decided to stay in the same legislative direction with the EC directives. The main reason of this decision was based on the fact that the Project Partners have already searched and gathered valuable information and data about GM Foods. Therefore, the data linked with GMOs will still appear in our "outputs" (including the Website), first with the clear statement that the relevant GMO products have now their own approaches, rules and legislation and secondly that this information is dedicated to and concerns only GMO and products.

The information provided in this website pertains to data provided by the individual partners of the project. The coordinator and moreover the Leonardo da Vinci Programme have no responsibility if some data differ from applied scientific and technological approaches and also if data will change in the course of time.
